Frozen Pipes

Freezing weather temperatures have affected Northeast PA with many areas seeing ice and freezing temperatures. The wintry weather can result in freezing pipes.

As water freezes, it expands, which could lead to pipes bursting which is a source of property damage.

Here are some tips on how to prevent frozen and burst pipes and how to know if in fact your pipes are frozen:

  1. Make sure all leaks are fixed ahead of the freeze.
  1. If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. It is possible only a portion of your pipe could be frozen, which is why less water is getting through.
  1. Keep an eye on pipes that are ones against exterior walls or in the attic or basement, or in other unheated parts of the property. These are most likely to freeze.
  1. Be on the lookout for any unshapely looking pipes could also mean the water has frozen inside and could be near bursting.
  1. Leaving the faucet to drip or trickle during wintry weather can prevent freezing. Moving water cannot freeze as easily. If the pipe has already frozen, turning on the cold-water faucet can also help relieve pressure.
