How to avoid frozen pipes

1/2/2018 (Permalink)

Pictures is a burst water pipe that caused thousands of dollars in damage in a business in Dallas.

Frozen pipes are unfortunately not uncommon this time of year in Northeastern Pennsylvania. However, this year its has been especially cold and for days at a time which lead to even a greater prevalence of this problem and SERVPRO of Hazleton/Dallas/Harveys Lake has been extremely busy dealing with the result of when the pipe burst. A water disaster!

Most of these situations can be avoided with a little proactive planning. When the temperatures dip it is important that you keep your heat no colder than 58 degrees. Open up cabinet doors to allow the heat to circulate under sinks. Allow the faucets to drip. Running water is much less likely to freeze.

Insulate exposed pipes, especially ones near an exposed outside walls like basements. Close up all open cracks in the foundation with either caulk or insulation.

All these tips will improve the chances that pipes will not freeze. And remember, it's the thaw, not the freeze that causes the water damage.

Be proactive and avoid any potential water disasters in in-door flooding.
